Ethiopia Food Crisis. Parents worry their children will starve to death
- A total of 20.4 million people in Ethiopia need food assistance
- 4.5 million children, women, men are displaced across the country due to conflict and drought and have no access to food, water, shelter
- 1/3 of the children are acutely malnourished
- 3 consecutive rainy seasons have failed, resulting in the worst drought in 40 years
Underlying causes of the crisis
Environmental
Extreme drought due to consecutive failed rains, resulting in failed harvests and severe food insecurity.
Political
Conflict between the Federal government and Tigray rebel forces have driven tens of thousands of families from their homes and crops. Centres set up for internally displaced persons in the north are completely dependent on food aid and trucked-in water.
Economic
Over the last 3 years, the global pandemic has put increased stress on already strained and underfunded health systems in countries like Ethiopia. It has interrupted supply chains and reduced foreign investment. The economic fallout has driven millions of families into deeper poverty and left them on the edge of survival. The war in Ukraine has made matters worse, sending food and fuel prices even higher.
Our Action Plan
Food Distribution
Wheat flour, cooking oil, legumes to feed malnourished children – $33 to give 2 months of food supplies per person.
Water
Trucks, fuel, generators, taps to provide clean water to displaced children and families, preventing diseases and needless death and disability among children.
Wash and hygiene
Jerry can, basin, soap, sanitary pads, underwear, chlorine, blanket, mattress to protect and support displaced families.
